CBD: An Explanation of Hemp Oil and the Potential Health Benefits of this Fascinating Product
CBD is a substance found in varying amounts in all cannabis plants. Studies on CBD are relatively new, but the health implications are fascinating.
CBD (cannabidiol) is the substance extracted from specific varieties of cannabis plants we know as hemp. CBD typically represents around 40 percent of hemp extract. Because CBD is extracted from cannabis plants, many people find the subject a bit confusing.
You may need to know that CBD is not psychogenic, meaning your consciousness is not altered in any way from the extract and you cannot get "high" from CBD; it just isn't possible. THC is the psychoactive compound responsible for the intoxicating effect of cannabis. CBD from hemp oil contains no THC, but appears to have an abundance of potential health benefits.
CBD From Natural Hemp
Hemp (Cannabis Sativa) is a plant that grows quite rapidly and is typically 6-12 feet tall. Because these plants have naturally low THC levels, they are legal to grow and the products, including CBD oil, are legal to sell and to purchase.
How CBD is Extracted from Hemp
To extract oil from the hemp plant, a strain that is naturally high in CBD is selected, grown and cultivated. Typically the entire plant is used for the extraction process. The CBD is extracted with alcohol or with CO2, very similar to the extraction used for other essential oils. Depending on the manufacturer, the resulting oils are diluted to accommodate different strengths of oil concentrations. Some oils are then flavored to make them more palatable.
CO2 extraction is the most gentle approach to extracting CBD from the hemp plant and may retain more of the products beneficial qualities.
An Abundance of Available CBD Products
Cannabidiol (CBD) products are legal in all states, and it is not difficult to find an abundance of products. It is important to purchase CBD products from a reputable source. You have a variety of products options. Some of those products include:
• Topical creams and ointments
• Edibles, in the form of baked goods or candy
• Vape liquids (some vape liquids can be ingested, but some ingestable liquids cannot be vaped)
The Many Benefits of CBD
CBD has become an increasingly popular dietary supplement and has shown promise in treating many forms of anxiety because of its calming effects. CBD is also proving to be beneficial in helping people cope with inflammation and pain.
Animal studies show that CBD can stop nausea and vomiting from chemotherapy, and may also be beneficial to those with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia because of its ability to prevent the accumulation of amyloid beta plaques, one of the biomarkers of Alzheimer's. CBD may offer other health benefits as well. Some of those benefits include:
• Alleviates the redness and swelling of psoriasis
• Cannabinoids may slow the growth of tumors
• Relieves pain and inflammation from arthritis
• Helps with sleep disorders and insomnia
• Reduces dependence on nicotine
Your Endocannabinoid System
You may not know this, but your body has an endocannabinoid system. That is one of the main reasons CBD could be so effective and beneficial to your health.
Your body naturally produces cannabinoids. The cannabinoids produced in your body are called endocannabinoids. Your endocannabinoid system is complicated network of messengers and receptors. These messengers and receptors work together to create a response within your brain and regulate many of your bodily functions. Some of these functions include:
• Immune function
• Pain perception
• Cardiovascular function
• Sleep regulation
• Memory and learning
• Neuroprotection and movement
• Appetite, digestion and metabolism
• Temperature regulation.
Exogenous cannabinoids are the cannabinoids that originate from outside your body, such as CBD. Exogenous cannabinoids are not broken down as quickly as endocannabinoids, so they have a stronger, longer-lasting effect. The therapeutic benefits of CBD are based on animal studies. There have not been many studies on humans, therefore no medical claims can be made at this time. CBD is viewed as a dietary supplement, not as a medical treatment.
Your endocannabinoid system is vital to your overall health and well-being. CBD supplements work with your endocannabinoid system and appear to offer plenty of health benefits. The studies on CBD and your endocannabinoid system are relatively new, but the health implications are fascinating.
